WP structure

  1. WP1 – Ecosystem Definition

    WP1 lays the foundations of the symbIoTe project: the envisioned use cases, the foreseen market conditions and opportunities, the requirements, and the architectural design  of the system. More specifically, the work in WP1 will include: a) The definition of the use cases that will be considered  throughout the duration of the project. These use cases will derive from the areas of smart residence, smart mobility, smart campus and smart stadium. b) The identification of current and trending business models in the IoT and Cloud market, in parallel with and originating from the definition of use cases. The effects of the symbIoTe solution to existing stakeholders, as well as the emergence of new stakeholders will be also considered. c) The collection and formulation of the functional and technical requirements of the symbIoTe framework. d) The design of the overall symbIoTe system architecture, based on the requirements. Existing and well-received standardized IoT architectures will be considered, in order for the final symbIoTe solution to be easily adopted and widely applicable.

  2. WP2 – Virtualization of IoT Platforms

    WP2 deals with the top-level layer of the symbIoTe stack pertaining to the application domain. The aim is to ease the development of end-user applications across various cooperative IoT platforms. WP2 will a) develop the common conceptual representation for the semantics of IoT and Cloud resources which lay the foundation for IoT platform interoperability, b) define and build the framework for virtualisation of IoT platforms to support resource discovery and data acquisition across platforms, and c) design and implement the high-level symbIoTe API as well as domain-specific enablers for symbIoTe-specific use cases.

  3. WP3 – IoT Platform Federation

    WP3 will develop federation processes, mechanisms and protocols to enable interoperability among the different IoT platforms to support cross-platform discovery and management of resources, taking into account security mechanisms and access scopes. It will be defined how federated resources of IoT platforms are grouped and how access to them. WP3 will also try to identify potential threats in real-time by defining a mechanism to detect anomalous interaction patterns. WP3 will investigate resource-trading aspects from an inter-disciplinary perspective to offer an improved QoE to end users.

  4. WP4 – Dynamic Smart Spaces

    This workpackage will work on the low level design and software development in order to support dynamic and adaptive configuration of smart spaces in every symbIoTe use case.The main objectives of this workpackage will be:

    • Design solutions for local registration, discovery and interoperability of smart objects
    • Define and implement powerful APIs for smart objects
    • Design efficient solutions for wireless network virtualisation and dynamic spectrum access
    • Deliver symbIoTe middleware and client software release for the realization of use-cases based trials
  5. WP5 – Use-case based Trials and Deployments

    In order to show that our developed SymbIoTe architecture is easily applicable for a variety of different domains, we focus in WP5 on designing, implementing and deploying use cases in typical daily environments. Based on the different IoT platforms and interests represented in the consortium, we consider the following use cases:

    • Smart Residence
    • EduCampus
    • Smart Stadium
    • Smart Mobility and Ecological Routing
    • Smart Yachting

    Starting from the specifications in WP1, we develop in WP5 a common methodology, processes and tools in order to implement the prototypic installations of the considered use cases. The resulting implementations will be tested in extensive trails at different partner locations. In order to increase the reliability of the use case scenarios, we apply a living lab approach, in which end users are engaged to ensure a user-centric evaluation. In this way we also intend to foster a community of end users with an interest to deploy our symbIoTe approach after the project.

  6. WP6 – Open Calls

    The main objective of WP6 is to organise 2  Open Calls and 1 Contest hackaton-style aiming at involving Third Parties in the use of the symbIoTe framework and validate the proposed innovative solutions. The Open Calls will be addressed to Research Groups, Companies and SMEs willing to contribute to the development of platform solutions and applications compliant with Symbiote. First Open Call will be launched in late summer 2016 and Second Open Call in late summer 2017. Results of Open calls and Contest will be assessed in order to evaluate their impact to the project’s objectives and to the IoT community.

  7. WP7 – Dissemination, Exploitation and Standardisation

    The main objective of WP7 is to create all the necessary actions to establish effective communication channels for the project outcomes along with feasible transition of technical and scientific results from the prototype stage to exploitable assets. It aims to work in different scenarios to ensure the impact and sustainability of the SymbIoTe ecosystem beyond the formal project development timeline. WP7 efforts will focus on scrutinizing the exploitation potential and assessing the opportunities and risks.

  8.
